This picture was taken on the Powser Hughes family holiday in the Valais Region of Switzerland in 2004. The unspoilt village of Zmutt above Zermatt looking north to the Mischabel range with the Taschhorn (4490m) and Dom (4545M) gathering summit clouds in the afternoon heat. |

Another Powser Hughes family holiday in Switzerland in 2006. The Hughes girls enjoy a glorious day at Gornergrat (3100m), looking across the Gornergletscher to (from R to L), The Kleine Matterhorn (3883m), The Breithorn (4159m) and Pollux (4091m). |

John Hughes and John Titterington tackle the exciting Grade TD Via Ferrata at Evolēne in Val D’Herens Switzerland, in August 2006 . This is one of the two toughest Via Ferratas in Switzerland with serious exposure and a strenuous overhanging section in the middle of the main face. John T’s verdict ..”Flippin’ fantastic!! Shall we go back and do it again tomorrow?” |

Kili Day 5: John Hughes and John Titterington with pal Patrick O’Herlihy, climbed Kilimanjaro via the Shira Plateau and the dangerous Great Western Breach in September 2004. This summit route was closed to climbers in January 2006 after 3 American climbers and an undisclosed number of Tanzanian guides were killed in a massive avalanche on the Arrow Glacier which is located in the Breach. The photo taken just after dawn, looks back on the final easier section of the ascent route into the inner cone and the top of the Western Breach as the team approached the 5,895m (19,340 feet) summit of Uhuru Peak with the African plains 16,000 feet below. The rapidly receding Furtwangler Glacier, over 18,500 feet above sea level, (centre photo) is dramatic evidence of global warming. |
